Bartlomiej was a farmhand. He worked for a large land owner. The land owner would move his family to different estates depending on where he needed help so that only a few of his childrens birth records have been found. Some of the towns he lived in included Kobylniki, Sobiesierno and Przedbojewice near Inowroclaw, Poland (Gniezno Diocese) in what was then the German section of Poland. After Marianna died he remarried.
